Who would have thought to make beer using indigenous South African Rooibos and Honeybush wood? Well, it’s been done right here at Stellenbrau and has made international headlines!
Fact is, we don’t only produce award-winning craft brews, we also innovate – and our Governor’s Red Lager (a deep golden brew with a traditional malty character) is the first commercially brewed beer made this way (and from the same plant used to make the world famous ‘red tea!’)
We partnered with local entrepreneur Trevor Strydom, who licensed us as the first commercial brewery to produce beer that uses rooibos and honeybush wood during the boiling phase. The chips are added then to help create a uniquely and proudly South African lager! We launched the Governor's in 2014, and it’s proved very popular, with lads and lasses alike!
At the Audacia farm located along the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West you can visit the Root44 weekend market (open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am till 4 pm). Here you’ll find the dedicated Red Revolution stand where one can sample a tandem tasting of Audacia and KWV’s Rooibos wooded wines, our Governor’s Red and Windermere Rooibos Wooded cider! We recommend the experience highly for all aficionados of fine food and drink!
